Summary

The Court held that a voluntary statement obtained during custodial questioning without Miranda warnings does not automatically taint a later confession made after complete warnings and a knowing, voluntary waiver. Because the initial admission was uncoercive and the later confession was voluntary, the Miranda violation required exclusion of the first statement but not the second, so the Oregon Court of Appeals' judgment was reversed and the case remanded.
