Universities

LawDiver for Universities

A Dedicated Database of U.S. law for teaching and for building. About 10 million federal and state opinions, with good-law status and the citing-case graph, plus federal and state statutes, the Code of Federal Regulations, more than 1,300 United States treaties, and more than 8,000 pattern jury instructions. Students and faculty query it with SQL, call it through an API, or use the standard LawDiver interface.

Course

Free for spring 2027

One course or clinic, up to 100 students

The database for a class on building legal AI tools. Students receive the API and the research tools and write their own apps against live law: search, retrieval, a good-law check, and statute text, wired to Claude, OpenAI, or a model the school runs.

Dedicated Database

Starting at $5,000 / month

One or more private instances for the university

The university gets its own dedicated database in one or more private instances. Builders can reach it directly with SQL from their own tools, call the pre-built API, write their own API tools, or use LawDiver through the standard interface. The database is updated every night. The first month for one instance is free, with no obligation. All contracts are terminable at will by the customer. The price depends on the number of instances and the size of each instance.

What the database contains

Federal and state opinions, good-law status, the citing-case graph, courts, judges, and topics, plus versioned federal and state statutes, the Code of Federal Regulations, United States treaties, and pattern jury instructions. Counts by year, statute edition years, and which authorities are stored for search are on the coverage map.

Direct Database Access

The Dedicated Database can be opened directly with SQL commands. That access gives builders complete freedom and control to make whatever tools they wish to make.

Pre-built API calls

The API that ships with the database is a set of calls already written against it. A course or a lab can search, retrieve, and cite-check without writing those queries. A university with a Dedicated Database can develop additional API calls on that database: a query a seminar needs, an export a clinic wants, or a tool a lab builds for itself.

Request shapes, fields, and examples are in the API docs.

How it was built

The database was assembled from the Harvard Caselaw Access Project, CourtListener quarterly dumps, GovInfo, and government court and statute sites. No Westlaw product was used. No Lexis product was used. The build, the quoted tool licenses, and why the opinions and statutes carry no third-party research license are in Sources and Methods and Licenses and Permissions.

Ask for a Demonstration

Write to [email protected]. A Demonstration panel can be provided to qualified professors and administrators of an academic institution, so they can see what direct access to a database containing all U.S. law can do. The panel shows the tables and columns of the database. Visitors can run test SQL queries, in SQL or in natural language. The search lab lets builders and data analysts try different algorithms for legal search.
