Summary

The court held that the alimony order was modifiable because its three-year duration did not unambiguously preclude modification upon a substantial change in circumstances. The trial court therefore erred by treating the order as alimony in gross and by refusing to consider whether the plaintiff had shown grounds for modification. The judgment was set aside and the matter remanded for that determination. Arthur H. Healey, J., dissenting, would have held that the order barred any extension of alimony beyond three years.
