Supreme Court of the United States
Jules v. Andre Balazs Properties
May 14, 2026608 U.S. 200
Summary
Justice Sotomayor delivered the unanimous opinion holding that a federal court with jurisdiction over claims stayed pending arbitration under §3 of the Federal Arbitration Act retains jurisdiction to confirm or vacate the resulting award under §§9 and 10, even when those motions lack an independent jurisdictional basis on their face. The original claims remain pending during arbitration, and resolving the award's validity falls within the court's existing jurisdiction. Badgerow's prohibition on looking through freestanding confirmation or vacatur applications does not require a different result. The Court affirmed the Second Circuit's judgment. There were no separate opinions.

A federal court with jurisdiction over claims stayed pending arbitration under §3 retains jurisdiction to resolve motions under §§9 and 10 to confirm or vacate an arbitral award resolving those claims, without an independent jurisdictional basis on the face of those motions.
