Supreme Court of the United States

Darden v. Wainwright

June 23, 1986477 U.S. 168

Summary

Justice Powell's majority opinion upheld the denial of habeas relief. The Court held that the record supported excluding a prospective juror because of his opposition to capital punishment; that the prosecutors' improper closing arguments did not render the trial fundamentally unfair or undermine sentencing reliability under Caldwell; and that counsel's sentencing strategy did not constitute ineffective assistance. Chief Justice Burger concurred fully and separately defended the Court's review against suggestions that impatience had influenced its decision. Justice Brennan joined Justice Blackmun's dissent and separately stated that he would vacate the death sentence because capital punishment is categorically unconstitutional. Justice Blackmun, joined by Justices Brennan, Marshall, and Stevens, would reverse the conviction because the prosecutors' inflammatory arguments denied a fair trial and, independently, would vacate the death sentence because the prospective juror was improperly excluded.

Holding

  • Exclusion of a prospective juror opposed to capital punishment.. Murphy's exclusion was proper because the entire voir dire record fairly supported the determination that his views would substantially impair his performance as a juror.
  • Due process consequences of improper prosecutorial closing arguments.. Although the prosecutors' comments were improper and deserved condemnation, they did not render Darden's trial fundamentally unfair.
  • Application of Caldwell to the prosecutors' comments.. The comments did not violate the Eighth Amendment under Caldwell because they did not mislead the jury into believing it had reduced responsibility for the sentencing decision.
  • Effective assistance of counsel at the penalty phase.. Darden failed to establish that counsel's sentencing representation fell below an objective standard of reasonableness.
