The Supreme Court held that under § 706(k) of Title VII a district court may, in its discretion, award attorney's fees to a prevailing defendant only upon a finding that the plaintiff's action was frivolous, unreasonable, or without foundation, even though not brought in subjective bad faith.
The Supreme Court held that the Seventh Circuit lacked jurisdiction to review a district court's order granting habeas corpus relief because the State's notice of appeal was untimely. The Court ruled that the October 21, 1975 order granting the writ was final under 28 U.S.C.
The Supreme Court affirmed the Supreme Court of Georgia's judgment upholding the adoption of Leon Quilloin's illegitimate son by the child's stepfather, Randall Walcott.
