Washington Supreme Court

The State of Washington, Respondent v. Joseph N. Riley, Appellant

March 4, 1993121 Wash. 2d 22

Summary

The court held that the search warrant for Riley's home violated the Fourth Amendment because it authorized seizure of broad categories of evidence without identifying the crime under investigation or otherwise limiting the seizure. It reversed the convictions supported solely by evidence obtained under that warrant, but affirmed the two computer-trespass convictions because Riley's admissions and independent corroborating evidence supported them. The court also upheld the use of the line-trap evidence, the statutory application of computer trespass, and the crime-related sentencing conditions.
