Summary

The court held that the phrase “as a result of” in the guilty-except-for-insanity statute requires a defendant to show that the lack of substantial capacity was a consequence or effect of a qualifying mental disease or defect. The disease or defect may combine with another condition and need not be the sole or independently sufficient cause of the incapacity. Because the Court of Appeals applied an independent-sufficiency standard, the court reversed and remanded for further proceedings.
