Mississippi Supreme Court

Pastor Calvin Melton v. Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church

January 11, 2024

Summary

The Mississippi Supreme Court held that the Madison County Chancery Court lacked subject‑matter jurisdiction to decide whether Pastor Calvin Melton could remain the pastor of Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church, an inherently ecclesiastical question, and therefore reversed and vacated the chancellor’s orders. The Court also found the chancellor’s conduct of presiding over a church vote violated the state constitution’s establishment clause.
