Summary

The Michigan Supreme Court held that the term "law" in the Whistleblowers’ Protection Act includes the common law, so reporting a suspected common-law violation is not categorically excluded from statutory protection. The Court nevertheless did not decide whether gross negligence constitutes a violation of "a" law or whether Stefanski actually made, or was about to make, a qualifying report. It reversed the Court of Appeals and remanded for resolution of those issues.
