Summary

The Supreme Court of Maryland held that a detective’s testimony defining the slang terms “lick” and “sweet lick” as referring to a robbery and an easy robbery target was admissible lay opinion, not expert testimony. Because the meaning of the terms was within the range of perception and understanding of a layperson and the testimony did not depend on specialized methodology, the circuit court did not abuse its discretion in admitting it without expert qualification. The court affirmed the judgment below on different grounds.
