Summary

The court held that thirteen-year-old B.A. was in police custody and subjected to police interrogation when three uniformed school resource officers participated in questioning him about a bomb threat. Because officers gave no Miranda warnings and the statutory juvenile-waiver requirements were not followed, the court concluded that his statements should have been suppressed and reversed his delinquency adjudications. The court rejected an educational-purpose exception to Miranda and adopted a totality-of-the-circumstances approach for assessing custody in schools.
