Summary

The Illinois Supreme Court held that the parties’ stipulation that the defendant had two prior qualifying felony convictions supplied sufficient evidence of the predicate offenses required for an armed habitual criminal conviction, and therefore affirmed the conviction. The Court also rejected the defendant’s claim of ineffective assistance of counsel because the stipulation was a reasonable strategic choice and the defendant could not show prejudice. The appellate court’s reversal was vacated and the conviction reinstated.
