Summary
The court held that Salamon's statement was involuntary because police detained him incommunicado for approximately 24 hours, denied repeated requests for telephone access, and thereby prevented him from exercising his asserted right to counsel. Although the statement should have been suppressed, its admission was harmless beyond a reasonable doubt because the statement's substance was cumulative of other properly admitted evidence. The court also held that Salamon preserved his involuntariness claim for review.
