The court held that a Krankel inquiry is required only when the defendant clearly raises an ineffective-assistance claim pro se or directs counsel to raise it and counsel informs the court of that direction. Counsel's statements about being surprised by the other-crimes evidence did not clearly raise such a claim or establish that defendant had directed counsel to do so. The judgment was affirmed as modified, and conflicting appellate decisions were overruled to that extent.
