Middlebrooks v. State

Summary

The Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed Middlebrooks’s convictions for murder and cruelty to children. It held that any error in admitting an expert’s testimony about the consequences of a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity verdict was harmless because the evidence strongly supported the conclusion that Middlebrooks could distinguish right from wrong. The court also held that the challenge to limitations on a VA psychiatrist’s testimony was waived and that trial counsel’s performance did not prejudice the defense.
