Summary

The court held that admitting the perpetuated testimony of Avsenew's mother violated the governing criminal-procedure rule because she could not see Avsenew while testifying. The error was not harmless because her material and highly incriminating testimony could reasonably have contributed to the guilty verdicts. The court therefore reversed the convictions and death sentences and remanded for a new trial.
