Summary

The court held that the warrantless entry into the defendant’s apartment was not justified by the exigent circumstances doctrine because the police lacked probable cause to enter for crime-control purposes. It nevertheless held that the entry was justified under the emergency aid doctrine because the totality of circumstances provided an objectively reasonable basis to believe that someone inside was seriously injured and required immediate assistance. The court therefore reversed the Appellate Court and directed it to affirm the trial court’s denial of suppression.
