Supreme Court of Connecticut

Coughlin v. Stamford Fire Dept.

March 10, 2020334 Conn. 857

Summary

The court held that a firefighter with a timely and compensable hypertension claim under § 7-433c may obtain benefits for later heart disease without filing a new claim, provided the later condition is causally related to the initial compensable injury. The later diagnosis may occur after retirement because the relevant employment requirement applies to the initial compensable condition, not necessarily to its subsequent sequelae. The court therefore affirmed the Compensation Review Board’s decision.
