Supreme Court of Connecticut

Tomick v. United Parcel Service, Inc.

January 10, 2017

Summary

The court held that the statute authorizing legal and equitable relief under the Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act does not authorize statutory punitive damages for employment discrimination. Although the statutory language is broad enough to be ambiguous, the court applied the established interpretive approach requiring express authorization for extraordinary punitive damages absent significant contrary evidence. The court therefore affirmed the judgment upholding the trial court's setting aside of the jury's punitive-damages award.
