Supreme Court of Connecticut

Lawrence v. O & G Industries, Inc.

November 24, 2015

Summary

The court held that construction companies do not owe a duty of care to workers who suffer only lost wages after a negligently caused accident interrupts the workers' employment. Although the economic losses were foreseeable, the public-policy factors—particularly attenuated causation, the risk of expansive liability and litigation, and the absence of a corresponding safety benefit—barred recovery. The court therefore affirmed the orders striking the relevant negligence counts.
