Supreme Court of Connecticut

Stratford v. Afscme, Council 15, Local 407

December 23, 2014

Summary

The court held that Connecticut recognizes a public policy against intentional dishonesty by police officers when it directly concerns their qualifications or ability to perform official duties. It nevertheless concluded that reinstatement was permissible because the officer's misconduct, though serious, did not compromise his ability to serve and was sufficiently punished by a nine-month suspension without back pay and possible future medical examinations. The court therefore reversed the Appellate Court and directed it to affirm the trial court's refusal to vacate the arbitration award.
