Supreme Court of Connecticut

Stratford v. Afscme, Council 15, Local 407

December 23, 2014

Summary

The dissent would have affirmed the Appellate Court's conclusion that reinstatement of a police officer who intentionally lied about his medical history and alcohol use violated the dominant public policy requiring police honesty and integrity. It reasons that the officer's dishonesty directly concerned his fitness for duty, irreparably compromised his credibility, and required termination rather than a suspension. The dissenting judges therefore would have required the arbitration award to be vacated.
