Summary

The court held that the defendant was in Miranda custody when seven armed officers detained her during execution of a search warrant, confined her to a couch, and questioned her without warnings. Because her unwarned verbal and nonverbal responses were admitted and constituted the only direct evidence that she knew heroin was concealed in the bedroom, the constitutional violation was not harmless beyond a reasonable doubt. The judgment was reversed and the case was remanded for a new trial.
