The court held that, absent a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, a defendant may not introduce mental-condition evidence that is probative of the statutory definition of insanity, regardless of whether the evidence is offered to support self-defense. But evidence concerning a less-severe mental illness remains potentially admissible if it satisfies the statutory notice and examination requirements and the rules of evidence.
