Summary

The court held that a guilty plea entered under a deferred-judgment stipulation does not produce a final, appealable judgment until the deferral is revoked, sentence is imposed, and a judgment of conviction enters. It therefore vacated the court of appeals’ decision because that court lacked authority to entertain the immediate appeal, but exercised original jurisdiction to address the plea-withdrawal claim and concluded that counsel adequately advised the defendant that he would be deported. The court returned the matter to the district court for further proceedings.
