Summary

The court held that the word “proceedings” in Penal Code section 2900.5, subdivision (b), refers to an individual criminal case rather than a joint sentencing hearing. Presentence custody credits therefore must be attributable to the particular case for which credits are sought and do not automatically transfer across separate cases merely because they are resolved together. The court reversed the Court of Appeal and remanded for further proceedings consistent with its opinion.
