California Supreme Court
Michael G. v. Super. Ct.
April 6, 2023
Summary
The court held that a juvenile court is not automatically required to extend reunification services beyond 18 months merely because services provided during the 12-to-18-month period were unreasonable. After 18 months, the court ordinarily must proceed toward permanency, but it may use its discretionary authority to extend services and continue the permanency hearing in extraordinary circumstances if good cause exists and the extension is not contrary to the child's interests. The judgment affirming the denial of Father's writ petition was affirmed.
