California Supreme Court
Geiser v. Kuhns
August 29, 2022
Summary
The court held that a sidewalk demonstration protesting a real estate company's foreclosure and eviction practices was protected activity under the anti-SLAPP statute's catchall provision. Applying the required two-step inquiry, the court concluded that the protest could reasonably be understood, in context, to implicate public issues concerning unfair housing practices and residential displacement and that it contributed to public discussion of those issues. The court reversed the Court of Appeal's judgment and remanded for further proceedings.
