Summary

The court held that defendant clearly invoked his Fifth Amendment right to counsel during custodial interrogation, and that police violated that right by continuing to question him. His subsequent statements were therefore inadmissible, and their admission was not harmless beyond a reasonable doubt because they were the centerpiece of a relatively weak prosecution case. The court reversed the judgment in its entirety and remanded for further proceedings.
