California Supreme Court
In re A.N.
May 4, 2020
Summary
The court held that a juvenile court may exercise formal wardship jurisdiction over a minor based on four or more reported truancies within one school year, even without prior referral to a school attendance review board or similar mediation program. It further held that the fourth truancy must have been reported to the attendance supervisor or school district superintendent, but need not have been separately reported to the minor's parents. Because A.N.'s attendance records established at least four qualifying reports before the petition was filed, the court affirmed.
