Summary

The California Supreme Court held that a landowner generally owes no duty to protect invitees from the obvious dangers of crossing a public street merely because the landowner maintains an overflow parking lot across that street. The Church did not control or create a danger on the street, and the alleged conduct did not obscure or magnify the street's risks. The court therefore reversed the Court of Appeal and remanded for further proceedings, including possible consideration of a voluntarily assumed duty.
