Summary

The Arizona Supreme Court held that the State did not violate Melendez's due process or self-incrimination rights by using his post-Miranda statements and temporary deferrals during impeachment. Melendez did not unambiguously invoke his right to remain silent, continued speaking, and ultimately addressed the substance of the questions he had deferred. The court therefore affirmed his convictions and sentences and vacated the court of appeals' opinion.
