Summary

The court held that Arizona law does not require a separate or heightened competency finding before a criminal defendant who has previously been found competent to stand trial may waive a jury. The trial court need only determine that the defendant is competent to stand trial and that the waiver is knowing, voluntary, and intelligent; the record supported both determinations here. The court therefore affirmed the convictions and vacated the contrary portions of the court of appeals' opinion.
