Summary
The Arizona Supreme Court held that the patients’ accord and satisfaction agreements with hospitals were valid even assuming federal law preempted the Arizona statutes authorizing the hospital liens. Because the legality and enforceability of the liens presented bona fide disputes when the agreements were made, the settlements had proper subject matter and adequate consideration. The court reversed the court of appeals and affirmed dismissal of the patients’ claims. No separate opinions were issued.
