On independent review, the court held that the State failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Wallace inflicted gratuitous violence on either child under the governing two-pronged test for heinousness or depravity. Because the sole alleged aggravating circumstance was not established, the court vacated the two death sentences and imposed consecutive life sentences, to be served consecutively to the previously imposed life sentence for Susan’s murder.
