Arizona Supreme Court

Kirk Adams, Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives

July 8, 2011227 Ariz. 128

Summary

The court accepted special-action jurisdiction and held that the legislative leaders had standing to challenge the nominee list. It held that irrigation-district directors hold public office and therefore were constitutionally ineligible to serve on the Independent Redistricting Commission, but that a tribal judge does not hold public office for purposes of the eligibility restriction. Justice Brutinel, dissenting in part, would have construed the restriction broadly to include tribal judges.
