The Alaska Supreme Court held that a parent who already has a legal parent-child relationship with a child may not use the adoption statute to terminate the other parent's rights when the adoption would not replace that parent with another legally obligated adult. Because the statute did not authorize the requested adoption, the superior court properly denied the petition and awarded custody instead. The court therefore affirmed.
