Supreme Court of the United States
Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta
June 29, 2022597 U.S. 629
Summary
The Court held that Oklahoma and the Federal Government possess concurrent jurisdiction to prosecute crimes committed by non-Indians against Indians in Indian country. It concluded that neither the General Crimes Act nor Public Law 280 preempts Oklahoma's jurisdiction, and that exercising state jurisdiction in these circumstances does not unlawfully infringe tribal self-government. The Court therefore reversed the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals and remanded.
