Supreme Court of the United States

Lange v. California

June 24, 2021

Summary

The Court held that an officer’s pursuit of a fleeing misdemeanor suspect does not categorically justify warrantless entry into the suspect’s home. Instead, the officer must assess the totality of the circumstances to determine whether a genuine law-enforcement emergency made it impracticable to obtain a warrant. Because the California Court of Appeal applied a categorical rule, the Court vacated and remanded.
